France is great at a lot of food-related stuff. Fine wine, delicious cheeses, misplaced concern over the apocalyptic propensity of chocolate spread. But doughnuts? Well, now those grease-smothered, sugar-laden globules of dough are a proudly American invention.

But the United States may have to reassess its self-appointed status as Doughnut Lord of the Universe after one of its own placed an order for one million doughnuts—not with Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme nor any other homegrown, ring-slinging establishment in which an upstanding 'Merican citizen might put in such a request, but from France.

According to French newspaper Le Figaro, the unidentified Los Angeles customer placed the gargantuan order with French industrial bakery firm Berlidon last week. Apparently he or she settled on the Gard region bakery after it was recommended to them by another client (and presumably some sort of doughnut sensei) in Las Vegas. It is thought to be a record doughnut order from the US.

Speaking to the newspaper, Berlidon's general manager Luc Jeanierre said that the customer may have chosen to place their order with his firm over one closer to home because "there are not many industrial bakeries like ours. In addition, we offer a smaller than standard sized doughnut purposefully geared towards the American market."

The 200-person bakery exports 85 percent of its products and is noted for beignets, a type of deep-fried choux pastry. Sadly Jeanierre didn't say whether the mystery customer gave any indication as to what their one milli' order was for, nor even the type of doughnuts they chose. Were they jam or chocolate? Sprinkles or just frosting? Maybe our man/woman was a fan of the Boston Creme.

MAKE: 8-Ball White Truffle Doughnuts

As the doughnut evolves from being a breakfast time staple to a treat food, Americans are becoming more open to flavour combinations beyond the trusty glazed ring (looking at you, Cronut). Perhaps it should come as no surprise that some doughnut fiends taking their search further afield.

And America, while you're in the market for a different type of doughnut, do you want to take a look at this doughnut-sausage hybrid a British guy made? It's called a "dausage" and it's basically a hot dog filled with strawberry jelly. No? We can do half orders…
