Tech companies are already under scrutiny for letting Russia influence the 2016 presidential election. Now there’s another scandal roiling the tech world involving some of its biggest players: where the cheese on a burger emoji goes.Over the weekend, writer Thomas Baekdal pointed out that Google’s emojis feature an unorthodox arrangement of ingredients on America’s Sandwich:
Setting up your burger like this would make the bottom bun all kinds of soggy, and this set off a classic viral social media argument — over an extremely inconsequential subject about which people have deeply held opinions.

Then, because this is 2017, Google CEO and mega-influencer Sundar Pichai responded to #burgergate 12 hours later.
The debate raged on Monday morning on Twitter about the proper cheeseburger layering, though Google still hadn’t changed the emoji. The subject was important enough for “Fox & Friends” to run with the story even as Paul Manafort, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, turned himself in to the FBI as part of the special counsel investigation into Russian election meddling.
