Mister Saturday Night co-founder Justin Carter today shared a pensive new track, titled "Leaves," off his forthcoming debut LP The Leaves Fall. While the previously released lead single "Know It All" completely departed from the dance styles Carter is known for as a DJ, "Leaves" edges back towards those zones with a tense house beat and wound-up synths. The instrumentation compliments the tone of the lyrics, which engage with an abstract sense of impending doom.Carter told THUMP that the track arose from psychological self-examination. "The song is about the human capacity to compartmentalize intense thoughts and feelings, and how that coping mechanism might fail us on an individual and societal level," he said. "Our minds are built to sanction experiences that are terrifying and heartbreaking so that they don't overwhelm us. I find myself worrying these days that my ability to turn off the realities of climate change or the stated policies of the incoming administration doesn't actually serve me. 'Leaves' is me wondering aloud if I should let those feelings guide me more."The Leaves Fall will be released on the Mister Saturday Night label on February 24.
