Having directed the sensationally moving (and emotionally grueling) romantic drama Blue Valentine, American filmmaker Derek Cianfrance is back with an altogether more ambitious but nevertheless intimate crime drama The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling, Eva Mendes and Bradley Cooper.
