A man in Manchester has reportedly walked into a police station and asked to be deported back home to Iran, having grown weary of living in the city.

Police arrested 25-year-old Arash Aria after he informed them he had been living in the UK without a visa for the past 10 years, before releasing him when immigration checks proved he had indefinite leave to stay. According to Mr. Aria, the people of Manchester have not been very welcoming to him. He told the Daily Telegraph: "I try to ignore people, but I'm fed up now. I don't get the respect I should here. People are not friendly here in Manchester. When they are rude to me, I don't like it."

Greater Manchester Police said the incident was "strange" and described Aria as "angry" in a series of tweets. Officers later tweeted an update to followers: "Man arrested demanding deportation (fed up after 10 yrs in Manchester) may have to find own way home; was released after immigration liaison."

Having previously held roles as both a waiter and barman, Arash Aria said he is now unemployed. Despite learning of his status as a permanent resident, Mr. Aria plans to return to his home city of Shiraz in south west Iran upon renewal of his expired Iranian passport.
