It's definitely dog days for new TV series content and big movie blockbusters are only just starting to roll out, but if you're desperate to sit naked in front of a fan and eke out these heatwaves with dignity, there's a bunch of new shit hitting Netflix in July. These are my picks for early summer viewing.Hacksaw Ridge and Braveheart
I genuinely hate to plug a single Mel Gibson movie, let alone two, but ol' SugarTits' WWII drama is a gory, epic war saga that features Andrew Garfield as pacifist Desmond Doss who refuses to carry a weapon into battle. It was nominated for six Oscars and picked up two for editing and sound mixing. And of course, Gibson's monumental tome to Scottish hero William Wallace earned him a Best Director nod at the 1995 Academy Awards. Both films are the kind of endless epics that fuel idle summer viewing.

Legends of the Fall
Horny 12-year-old Amil extremely loved this movie which featured top-of-his-game Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn competing for the love of their dead brother's fiance, played by Julia Ormond. It's a pretty fucked up but lush, compelling love story. Plus, Sir Anthony Hopkins is in it. Just over 20 years later, Legends of the Fall absolutely holds up.Oasis: Supersonic
No matter which Gallagher brother you prefer (the correct answer is Noel), this documentary is a must-watch for fans of old-fashioned rock 'n' roll debauchery. They fuck, they snort, they fight, they occasionally play music and most importantly, they hate each other in a gloriously over-the-top way.Raising Arizona
IMO there is no greater parenting movie than Raising Arizona. Holly Hunter and Nicholas Cage are a hapless married couple who, unable to conceive on their own, kidnap a baby. It's iconic Coen Brothers fare with amazing performances from the entire cast, which includes Frances McDormand and John Goodman. If you haven't seen this movie honestly, what are you doing with your life?Toni Erdmann
Straight up one of the year's best films, Toni Erdmann is both funny and heartbreaking. For some ungodly reason the German film, nominated for an Academy Award this year for Best Foreign Language Film, is being remade in the US with Jack Nicholson and Kristen Wiig slated to star. See the original before the Hollywood version taints your view of this moving father-daughter dramedy. Why the fuck are kids movies so sad? I accidentally watched Up! by myself in a theatre full of small children and was very scarily sobbing within the first 10 minutes. I'm surprised I wasn't escorted from the premises. Anyway, I knew better with Inside Out and watched it in the safety and comfort of my own home but nonetheless I was bawling almost immediately. A film about the intensity of childhood feelings and letting go of the past is exactly as tender and emotionally traumatising as it sounds.
