Flyers Fans Had Themselves a Night in 6-1 Loss to Caps

Flyers fans are in for a lot of grief after their performance last night.

The Flyers went down three games to none against the Capitals last night in an ugly 6-1 loss at the Wells Fargo Center. From the start you could tell it was going to be a rough scene when Flyers fans yelled "Fuck the Caps" during a moment of silence for the recently deceased founder of the team, Ed Snider.

Things then got dicier late in the game, after the Caps took a 4-1 lead. As the puck went into the corner behind the Flyers' net, Pierre-Édouard Bellemare slammed a crouching Dmitry Orlov into the corner, causing his head to slam into the boards. Orlov was dazed for a bit, but he did make it back to the bench on his own. Bellemare was given a five-minute major and a ten-minute misconduct and fans responded by throwing special bracelets given to every fan for a Snider tribute. The bracelets were intended to light up according to section, but they wound up on the ice. One of them even hit a bloodied up Orlov once he got to the bench.

The truly gut-wrenching moment comes when the Flyers PA has to ask fans to "have some class" and stop throwing the bracelets. You can hear one nearby fan in the video above responding with a curt "no." Fans continued to throw bracelets, and beers, and whatever else they could find. Despite several warnings, the Flyers were assessed a penalty as a result of the fans' misconduct, just as the Panthers were recently when their fans threw rubber rats on the ice.

The best fan bit from last night, for my money, happened right behind NBCSN's Pierre McGuire, when a fan took a picture of herself flipping off Washington's bench. It's really a wonderful sports moment.

Talk is centering around whether Philly Fans are trash bags, and whether they are living up to their widely known national reputation. But that's an oversimplification to fit a pre-existing narrative. Philly fans are just like any other fans, and when their season effectively went down in flames at the hands of a team they despise, they got incredibly salty. And for some reason, after all the controversies this year regarding thrown items on the ice, the Flyers gave every single person in the building a projectile in waiting.
