Traffic Jams: Take Me to 'Funky Town'

In this, the last of our city-specific mixtapes made with UBER, we bring you the sounds of Glodok—Jakarta's Chinatown.

Nightlife moves fast in Glodok—about 220 BPM fast. West Jakarta's Tamansari district is full of some of the oldest, and wildest, neighborhoods in the city. This is where Jakartans can truly let their hair down. South Jakarta may be hip, and Central may be classy, but the old town is where you want to be when the clock strikes 3 am. Where else can you dance until dawn in a nightclub conveniently hidden on the top floor of a weird parking garage?

An all-night party needs a soundtrack to match. Enter: Funkot. It's like the weird child of breakbeat, happy hardcore, and dangdut, all played at breakneck speeds and at deafening decibels. This is pure lose yourself music, the kind of repetitive, high-energy craziness you would expect from a night out on the "wrong side of town."

Need an introduction? We asked Samson, AKA Uda Sjam, of Laidback Blues, to make this 37-minute mix as a primer for the uninitiated. We keep it familiar here, starting with a Sir Mix-A-Lot sample (or is that Tone Loc?) and end it with a remix of "Buat Apa Susah?" by Koes Plus. Think of this mix as friend holding your hand to guide you into a whole new world. Hit play and we promise you that you'll be ready for the real stuff by the mixtape's end.
