Italy Just Got an All-You-Can-Drink Wine Fountain

A vineyard on the Cammino di San Tommaso pilgrimage route between Rome and Ortona has installed a fountain that flows with locally produced red wine. And it’s free for anyone to drink.

Whatever your idea of heaven—fields of frolicking baby Labradors, a baked Camembert the size of your head, Drake in a fluffy blue turtleneck—a bounteous supply of good booze is probably high on the list. If not, it should be. Just imagine: a never-depleting fridge of ice-cold beers or swimming pools of perfectly mixed gin and tonic. That's not a bad way to spend eternity.

For Italians in the Abruzzo region, heaven has just become a place on earth (minus the puppies and rappers-in-knitwear, though).

As The Local reports, a vineyard on the Cammino di San Tommaso pilgrimage route between Rome and Ortona has installed a fountain that flows with locally produced red wine. And it's free for anyone to drink.

The vineyard, Dora Sarchese, say they were inspired to install the booze dispensary after seeing a similar fountain on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route in Spain. They built theirs in partnership with the non-profit organisation that maintains the Cammino di San Tommaso.

Writing on Facebook, the Dora Sarchese owners said: "The wine fountain is a welcome, the wine fountain is poetry."

Although not, it must be noted, poetry for just anyone to enjoy. Dora Sarchese also stated that the unlimited wine supply was out of bounds for "drunkards" and "louts." And presumably anyone with a Bridget Jones-esque propensity for putting away plonk.

While the Arbruzzo wine fountain isn't the first of its kind in the country (nor Europe—Slovenia got a beer fountain earlier this year), the vineyard says it is the only one in Italy that dispenses wine 24/7.

Which gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "wine o'clock."
