McDonald’s Didn’t Notice How NSFW Its New Holiday Cup Can Be, But the Internet Did

If there’s one indelible lesson to be learned from the unmitigated clusterfuck that was 2016, it’s that there’s truly no greater medium for courting controversy than a disposable coffee cup.

First there was Scott Baio and a bunch of alt-right Trump supporters laughably attempting to stick it to everyone else with the short-lived #TrumpCup campaign—a self proclaimed “movement” in which they encouraged Trump followers to make Starbucks workers inscribe the president-to-be’s name on cups. As commentators have pointed out, they merely succeeded in lining Starbucks coffers with cold, hard cash, but they seem pretty proud of themselves, nonetheless.

Then there was the return of the Starbucks green “unity” cup that led to outrage back in 2015. Starbucks eventually settled on a red “holiday” cup, much to the chagrin of those who believe Christmas is being demeaned by being relegated to a mere “holiday”—you know, along with Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and every other religious celebration.

All in all, it’s become clear that coffee cups are now solidly a part of American political discourse. And if you thought that there wasn’t enough time left in 2016 for one last bout of cup-centric controversy, guess again.

Check out the latest McDonald’s coffee cup—and the doctored-up version tweeted by one brilliant visionary. With the addition of a couple simple squiggly lines representing fingers, the thing becomes something else entirely—or more of itself, depending on your point of view. In either event, everyone seems to agree: It looks like a Goatse-esque ass being spread apart is imprinted on the coffee cup now being used to serve fast-food java across this fair nation.

“Is it meant to to be a pair of ivory mittens playfully catching a glistening snowflake, a middle-aged man about to begrudgingly get his prostate examined, or just a wee bit of regular old sexual conquest?” That’s the question many McDonald’s customers are undoubtedly asking themselves after catching a glimpse of this year’s holiday McCafé cup. The photo with the added-on fingers is going viral, after first being posted on REBRN Saturday and then spreading to Reddit and elsewhere.

The splayed out Rorschach bottom, once seen, simply can’t be unseen. And just because the fast food behemoth has begun to block access to any and all pornographic materials on the public Wi-Fi in its US stores doesn’t mean that it too can’t try and remind you of sex while you eat.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s told MUNCHIES the following: “Our festive McCafé cups are of mittens not hands. The altered image circulating on social media is the result of someone getting a little cheeky and adding some hand-drawing to a cup.”
