A Burger King in San Francisco Is Blasting Classical Music 24/7

Why not just constantly blast the shit out of some classical music in the hopes of deterring would-be loiterers? After all, there couldn’t possibly be a loiterer out there with enough class to stomach the tunes, right?

If there is one thing that San Francisco's substantial homeless and crust punk communities can agree on, it's that there's simply nothing worse than a little bit of Tchaikovsky or Brahms. Also, fuck Schubert.

Or to be more exact, that seems to be the belief held by one San Francisco Burger King location and a local nonprofit.

The Burger King located on the corner of Eighth and Market Street in San Francisco has had a pretty serious problem with people loitering around the front of the store. The fast food chain is located across the street from one the busiest rail stations in the city and often found its doorway blocked by shopping carts and sleeping bags.

So bad was the problem, the Central Market Community Benefit District—a local nonprofit aimed at creating a better Central Market area—decided to help out with a novel solution: Why not just constantly blast the shit out of some classical music in the hopes of deterring would-be loiterers? After all, there couldn't possibly be a loiterer out there with enough class to stomach the tunes, right?

A spokesperson for the Central Market Community Benefit District says the idea came about after reading about a similar strategy implemented for the London Underground. So far, the unconventional solution seems to have worked. ABC 7 News reports that since the speakers have been mounted to the storefront, there has been considerably fewer loiterers.

San Francisco resident David Allen says, "There used to be a mob that would hang out there. And now there may be just one or two people."

Oh, did we forget to mention that the speakers are actually playing classical music 24 hours a day? The fast food chain only deems it appropriate to lower the volume of the music from 11 PM to 10 AM.

It's sort of like that helicopter scene in Apocalypse Now, but without all the senseless mass slaughter.
