Nothing says "gearing up for Easter" like pulling a thin old bit of rope around a freshly laid egg and giving it a heave. Pull and pull on those little twists of hemp until the whole shellish bastard breaks into a pool of spilled potential and yellow yolkish string. Then, when you're quite sure the egg has been obliterated beyond repair, mop that sorry mess up with the nearest white rose to hand.

The words "tray bake" usually summon the image of one of those desperate tin squares of joyless brown cake, pulled out of an orange carrier bag under your colleague's desk, just seconds before everyone in the office breaks into a round of "Happy Birthday" beside a stack of photocopier paper and two abandoned keyboards. This, on the other hand, looks delicious.

The hours I spent as a child, giving myself a near-hernia trying to blow the glutinous remains of an unfertilised chicken out of a needle-sized hole over a mixing bowl. And all so I could then paint the exoskeleton with thick daubs of poster paint and hang them on a stick.

For those of you lucky enough not to have been raised by the product of 1950s Britain, Simnel cake is an unholy coagulation of marzipan, fruit cake, jam, and butter. Imagine the smell of European shampoo made a solid, diabetic reality. Lovely with a cup of tea.
