Earlier this month, news emerged that two Brits had been charged in a criminal court with smuggling a substance between Norway and Sweden.

That substance? Not hard drugs, weapons, nor Komodo dragons. Not even a sneaky pirate copy of Avatar.

No, the duo was accused of covertly transporting a combined total of 1,287 metric tons of garlic across the Norway-Sweden border on 59 separate occasions. Prosecutors at Sweden's Uddevalla district court alleged that the pair had hidden the stinky load to avoid paying EU import duties, which totaled 2.6 million euros.

That's a lot of bruschetta.

In the end, though, it was good news for the accused garlic mules. The court could not prove that more than one illicit transportation of the vegetable had taken place, nor that the pair were even involved.

Guilty or not, this may be the epitome of "coming up smelling of roses."
