Would You Drink a Theresa May Beer?

The “Come What May” draught beer is on tap at two pubs in the new Prime Minister’s Maidenhead constituency.

Gone are the days when the most political things would get down the pub would be a slightly heated discussion on whether to get the house wine or the second-from-the-top one. From Brexit beer mats to presidential candidate-mocking IPAs, drinking dens are the new Speakers' Corner.

It should come as little surprise, then, that someone has created a pint in honour of Britain's new Prime Minister, Theresa May. Of course they have.

Named "Come What May," the draught beer is the work of Star Pubs and Bars, the pub business arm of international beer company Heineken. As of yesterday, the beer is being sold in two pubs in May's Berkshire constituency. The handle features a fetching picture of the new PM outside Number 10—just what you want to look at over a packet of salted peanuts.

Katie Roberts-Smith, general manager of The Old Swan Uppers, one of the two pubs in Cookham serving the beer, described it to MUNCHIES as a "light, golden pale ale which is perfect for the summer." She explained that her pub decided to serve the beer "because it's not every day that your MP becomes your Prime Minister."

Come What May was on tap in time for May's first Prime Minister's Questions after her appointment last Wednesday and Roberts-Smith says that it has been popular with locals: "It's done better than other golden ales we've had on before and it's been a great talking point among customers."

As May prepares to pay tricky visits to Berlin and Paris this week, a strong pint may well be in order.
