Almost 3/4 of Democrats Would Give Up Drinking to See Trump Impeached, Survey Says

It's no secret that America's feeling pretty damn divided in unprecedented ways right now, politically speaking. But just how divided, or how impassioned each side is, can be a little trickier to tell. How do you quantify discontent? Well, if a new survey is any indication, it might be by asking Americans if they'd be willing to give up their favorite pastime—drinking, duh, not baseball—if it meant removing Trump from office. And the number who would do just that is, um, pretty high.

In a survey of 1,013 men and women in the United States, the majority of respondents said that they would willingly give up alcohol for the rest of their lives if President Donald Trump would be impeached tomorrow. The survey was limited to active alcohol drinkers, and 73.3 of the Democrats polled would be willing to make that trade, as would 17 percent of Republicans. By contrast, only 30.6 percent of Republicans and a thin sliver of Democrats (6.5 percent) would give up booze if it meant that the media would stop writing anything negative about Trump.

The survey, which was conducted by Detox.net, asked participants a wide range of questions about what it would take to incentivize them to quit drinking. (For example, 17.1 percent of respondents would rather give up sex for a month than to abstain from alcohol). The virtual clipboard holders also learned that if you want to bribe the average drinker to quit, you'd have to pay them $400 to give up booze for a month, $4,708 to stop for a year, and $365,458 if you expected them to never have a drink ever again. But back to that impeachment question: according to the most recent Gallup poll, President Trump's weekly approval rating has dipped to a new low of 37 percent, while his disapproval rating is at an all-time high of 58 percent. During the 20-ish weeks he's served so far, his approval rating has averaged around 40 percent. In a Politico poll that was published at the beginning of June, 43 percent of American voters "support the idea of beginning the official impeachment process for Trump."

Of the participants in the Detox.net poll, 21 percent identified as Republican, 43 percent identified as Democrat, and 36 percent were independent or other. Gender-wise, participants were 41 percent women, 58 percent men, and 1 percent other.

Obviously, there's a complicated and long list of Things that Have to Happen to impeach a president and, regardless of those approval numbers or whether we all join hands and promise we'll never drink again, it's ultimately not our decision. But if that day comes, you can bet that there will be quite a few people raising their final glasses.
