Shoppers Hoarding Food for Winter Storm Still Refuse to Buy Pineapple Pizza

For the past few days, the weather in the United Kingdom has been uncharacteristically awful, with brutally cold temperatures, dangerous winds, and heavy snowfall. The UK’s national weather service, the Met Office, issued its most severe alert as parts of England, Wales, and Scotland endured what was described as “the worst weather in years.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, thousands of people immediately stripped their local supermarkets’ shelves of milk, bread, and eggs—but apparently, even panic-buying has its limits.

Lewis Wake, a DJ from Edinburgh, tweeted a picture of a shelving unit at Tesco supermarket, which had been emptied of everything… except for three ham and pineapple pizzas. “The people have spoken,” he wrote. And the people would clearly rather have a cartons of bone broth and a handful of snow than to have to endure pizza topped with pineapple.

Although snow-frenzied shoppers might’ve left those pizzas behind, the majority of Brits claim to be OK with that combination. Last year, market research firm YouGov surveyed 3,683 residents of Great Britain about their pizza preferences, and 53 percent of them responded that they “liked” pineapple as a topping. (Forty-one percent said hell no, while the remaining 6 percent were apparently either too busy eating pizza or throwing pineapples into a furnace to respond).

In that same survey, respondents said that their favorite pizza topping was mushrooms, followed by onion, ham, and peppers. Pineapple was ranked between bacon and corn, because there is no god. (Participants were allowed to choose multiple toppings for their ideal pizzas).

The UK’s major grocery retailers have told the BBC that they are trying to replenish their barren store shelves as quickly as they can, as the weather improves. (On Sunday, a Tesco spokesperson said that the chain is "working incredibly hard to make deliveries.”

Sadly, that probably means more pineapple pizzas.
