Becoming an actor isn't easy. If you're a working actor, you're lucky. But if you're an actor out of work, you're probably forced to wait tables, bartend, or work a side hustle until a role comes up.

So on the last episode of the first season of MUNCHIES: The Podcast, I chat with the award-winning actress who has left an unexpected impact on the culinary and films worlds alike: Madhur Jaffrey, a.k.a. the genius who brought Indian cuisine to the west with her first cookbook, An Invitation to Indian Cooking.

But cooking was never part of her plan.

Madhur's first passion, acting, brought her to New York in 1957. She's appeared in important films such as "Shakespeare Wallah," and played a critical role in introducing legendary Indian filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory. For Madhur, these paths are not separate. I sat down with her to discuss how being an out of work actor brought her into the culinary world and why—for her—cooking and acting are one in the same.
