This Mixed Berry Pie Is the Best Way to Celebrate Anything

You just can't go wrong putting a bunch of sugar and fruit into a flaky, buttery crust.

Our birthday only comes once a year, and on this day, most of us eat cake. We put in the candles, we sing the universally hated birthday song, and then we're forced to take a bite regardless of whether we want to.

But the truth is birthday cake isn't even that good. Sure, you can always get an ice cream cake, or some uncommonly delicious chocolate mousse cake, but the only good part of your run-of-the-mill cake is the scoop of ice cream on the side (funfetti excluded).

So why then are we giving everyone more-often-than-not mediocre dessert on the one day a year we're supposed to be celebrating them? What we should be doing is giving everyone birthday pie (not to mention wedding pie, going-away pie, and pie for every other celebratory occasion).

Pie is almost invariably delicious—every kind of pie. Pecan pie. Rhubarb pie. Pie with literally any kind of fruit. You just can't go wrong putting a bunch of sugar and fill-in-the-blank into a flaky, buttery crust.

Sometimes, you just want berries though and we've got a hankering for this pie from Oakland soul food institution Lois the Pie Queen. Even if this is the closest you ever get to knowing Lois, take one bite and you'll know she lived up to her name.

RECIPE: Mixed Berry Pie

So go ahead and bake this pie for your friend on their upcoming birthday. Or have someone bake it for you for your birthday. Or just scoop some ice cream on top and pretend it it's your birthday. You deserve it after all those years of eating mediocre cake.
