These Teenagers Made a Rap Song About Healthy Eating and It's a Total Banger

We’d share some lyrics, but honestly, they might give you the idea that the song sucks —i.e., “Screaming 'Hot Cheetos and Takis,' but you better eat your broccoli”—which is not the case.

Sorry Dead Prez; the award for best rap banger about eating fresh fruits and vegetables now belongs to Appetite for Change (APC). The Minneapolis-based nonprofit stumbled into internet fame when a music video produced by its Summer 2016 Youth Employment and Training Program went viral. The song, "Grow Food", extolls the virtues of urban farming, and the online world agrees: It knocks. Now, by popular demand, it will be soon be moving to iTunes.

"Grow Food" was produced in conjunction with Beats & Rhymes, a youth music engineering outreach program, and finds kids from the APC's summer training program rapping about healthy living over an infectious drill beat. In the video, nutrition-minded youths defiantly turn up their noses to unhealthy cafeteria food, instead heading to the community garden down the street.

We'd share some lyrics, but honestly, they might give you the idea that the song sucks —i.e., "Screaming 'Hot Cheetos and Takis,' but you better eat your broccoli"—which is not the case. And anyway, we don't want to give anything away when you should give it a legitimate view or maybe even a buy on iTunes, cuz hey, it's for a good cause.

Word of advice: Don't listen to it hungover eating a bodega breakfast sandwich in bed at 4 PM. It will really make you question your life choices.

Also, shout out to the aforementioned Dead Prez, whose song "Be Healthy" still boasts the best verse about eating your fruits and vegetables in hip hop history:

"I don't eat no meat / no dairy, no sweets Only ripe vegetables / fresh fruit and whole wheat I'm from the old school / my household smell like soul food, bro Curried falafel / barbecued tofu No fish though, no candy bars, no cigarettes Only ganja and fresh-squeezed juice from oranges Exercising daily to stay healthy And I rarely drink water out the tap, cuz it's filthy"

Preach!
